THE MESS & THE MOMENTS

h

i catch sight of myself in the midnight mirror,
with my hair in a mess and faded roses on my cheeks.
i hear the ocean all the way into our dim bathroom as i bend
over the sink and cup my hands with cold water against the skin,
trying to wake up for moments of milk and eskimo kisses.

i lower my entire face into porcelain and icy cold water,
open my eyes and blink below the surface
in my mind's eye - white wine swirling all the way into the sundays.
i see airports departures and arrivals, - how i’m met up with
bouquets of white flowers and dark eyes glittering with longing.
i see endless hours kissing at a tapas bar and bubble baths that lasted
until the water cooled without us noticing.
it is february of last year flickering in memory fragments.
my heart flutters and i can’t help but smile at my reflection,
- at her in that newly in love mess.

then was hours, days, weeks, with time seemingly not existing at all.
i could work so that all time lost its borders and i could rest,
sitting on an old radiator by the glass veranda, until my eyes
became misty against swaying, winter bare trees.

now everything is measured in time.
the time of a tiny body. milk-time & lullaby-time.
measured in what can get done in between.
and that’s almost nothing at all.
not if measured with the old familiar measuring rod.
but with the new one, that almost completely unused one,
the one we haven’t really learned how best to unfold,
- with that one we have time to watch him in amazement for so long
that the bubble bath we thought we’d share 'while he sleeps'
has had time to cool down without us noticing.
with that new measuring rod we learn all over again that
the smaller the moment the more it must be seized
and that things, even less so than before, turn out as imagined.
with that one we can measure new depths and even greater heights.
m says you have a brand new laugh, my darling!
and in his eyes right then, i see a brand new smile.

with love,

h

  1. you got my eyes all watery hannah...
& i find it the same,
although not so intense for me anymore
now that the kids are so big
    - that there may be less time to get lost in time,
but the quality of it does make up for the lack.
and then there's all that love that time & money can't even buy.

    1. yes, such a new concept that ..
.. and one that i (we) can already
sense the weight of, in one way,
      - but it seem to be true for
      e v e r y t h i n g now, that it’s so
double.. that it has brought out
      even m o r e of the stunning duality
of life, that it is also all the more
beautiful, there’s all the more love..

      .. and it’s true. i know he’s right.
      i’ve h a v e got an all new laughter..!
