THE WOMEN

’all the women in me.
are tired.‘

mitt kaffe. hans te. litens mjölk. i invand barfota dans.
men hon lyfter.

men hon minns.

med telefonen inkilad mellan axel och öra;

my art..?
it’s not business. it’s personal.

och så läser jag nya ord som fastnar, som får ta över;

i am obsessed with becoming
a woman
comfortable in her skin.

hannah

november left me with a sentence that remained.

'all the women in me.
are tired.'

when my reflection looks back at me in the vintage gold mirror in our bedroom,
where i sit, it seems, on the edge of the bed just as the sun rises,
i am stilly thankful that its glass is opaque like that,
has black blind spots of age. is a soft good morning
for one now in crumpled black silk and hair in disarray.
i pinch roses in my cheeks, a vain gardener.
the kisses are slumberous.
she's tired, the one stroking his stubbled chin.

*

my coffee. his tea. buba’s milk. in an accustomed barefoot dance.
eskimo kisses and a sudden, all clear, - mamma.
she’s tired, she who lifts him up off the floor right then.
but she lifts.
to the hip and on, up into the air. up, up, up.
hold him high in the morning light. everything for a delighted giggle.

a pile of letters and the phone as the paperweight.
replies that’s taken a long time and are still too short.
the sister. the friend. she’s tired, she who keys in replies,
where she’s sitting at the kitchen table for one
of those rare, and already meted, - moments of quiet.

the sister, the friend, tired of being tired.

*

the camera is heavy in the hand.
i answer questions about what i do, how i do it,
walking in circles across the floor and pray a silent prayer
for the last pieces to fall into place in the days unfolding.
she's tired, she who’s sorting words for photographs.
but she remembers.
every title and every poem. the tone of the photograph.
my only sharpness. my 'image memory'.

next week, my personal print shop will finally launch.
i mean, we have to do it in time to send christmas gifts.
and with it  i’m back to just that, - personal.
it feels so right and so good, all the way in, past the tired
and for all the parts that live in me.
as i answered, walking there in circles across the floor,
with the phone wedged between shoulder and ear;

my art ..?
it’s not business. it’s personal.

*

into december and far further than that,
i’m thinking that it's okey to be tired.
for me 2016 was a year that demanded,
one that brought most to a head. 2016 raised questions.
i think 2017 will be a year that answers.
and so i read a new sentence that remains,
one that gets to take over;

i am obsessed with becoming
a woman
comfortable in her skin.

i read them to her sitting on the edge of the bed,
to her barefoot dancing in the kitchen,
to the sister, and the friend. the lover.
to the photographer too.

and to you.

with love,

hannah

LESSONS IN PRESENCE

ständigt glödande i stearinljusens sken.

i

bland all tung sten.

lutar oss in över en mobiltelefon,

verkligen brinna dygnet runt bland all sten.

grottkyrkan, när den är dukad ren efter frukosten;
- sitter gäster utspridda medan klassisk musik slingrar
någon new york times över en kanna te.

försöker ta in hur vackert grottan omfamnar mig.

men fram.

och all kärlek,

h

all photographs are taken at sextantio le grotte della civita
and there’s a reason the new york times deemed it
"one of the most extraordinary destinations in the world"
and that the times calls it "one of the ten most beautiful hotels
on the international scene". it truly is the luxury of emotion
thank you for having us again sextantio..!

the stills with tea pots and the portrait of m

is taken by babysister emma and edited by me.
it so happens she captured in a way what i touch upon here.
just the same, my Man, - i loved you before i even met you.
perhaps even when we were both just stars.
you are my constellation.

i take a step back, remain at the door,
just observe while the others enter their cave suites.
i know roughly what the reaction will be.
they're family and i have been here before.
papa puts his hand on his heart and there it remains,
as he walks between the rooms.
mama’s eyes fill with tears to the brim.
for me it’s an even stronger experience this time.
perhaps because they are with us. because i get to experience
this with most of my family around me.
all the churches, temples and monasteries i’ve ever been in,
from bali to tuscany and in between, seem to come back to me,
seize me all at once and in one single sensation,
in the softest of violent blows.
and land there. yet another kind of home.

*
it's october and we’ve traveled back to matera.

we live for a while there in the cave city, hidden in the heel
of the italian boot, at sextantio le grotte della civita,
- the hotel project that is hidden as a true treasure,
in the oldest part of matera's sassi, the 'district of stone'.

the original floors are exhumed, stone by stone, - and then put back.

worn soft they now hide the wifi, underfloor heating
and all the modern luxuries.
them and the vaults rising above us, in honey colored limestone,
glowing constantly in candlelight.

for me it's about how everything is somehow stripped away

in that simplicity of stone, wood and light.
it speaks softly to something forgotten.
something deep inside, and eternal.
to at the same time also feel so completely taken care of
by pace and purity, the beautiful scent,
- and the fact that the abundance is so cleverly hidden,
also hold some sort of key.
as heavy as the key one receives to your cave,
ten centimeters of cast iron - as light is the feeling.
as lightly i give in.

perhaps it is that which is that softest violent. the realization.

maybe for how crystal clear and light it is,
among all the heavy stone.
the realization of the longing for just .. presence.

*

i think quite a lot about that during october in matera.

where the panoramic view is striking
over the ravine of murgia national park.
where people lived since the stone age,
in monastic orders and shepherd communities.
i think about how often we are somewhere far away.
how we turn away, so easily, from that
and those, closest to us.
leaning in over a mobile phone,
screened off before screens.

there are no tv-sets at sextantio.

it's still and silent.
and if one wish, the many and large candles
really can burn around the clock among the stone.
it slows down time. your breathing too.

on the terrace, around various old wooden tables
and inside the cave church, when cleared after breakfast;
left with only white linen
and slumbering trimmed sunflower faces,
now facing the candlelights shine,
- sit guests scattered as classical music meanders between stones.
someone is reading a book over a glass of wine.
somebody else the new york times over a pot of tea.
papa is occupied for a while in a bowing ritual with a japanese couple.
it's not just me who has a church or a temple,
suddenly within.

one afternoon i lie for a long time soaked in a bubble bath
with a glass of white and just stare at the ceiling.
i try to take in the beauty of how the cave embrace me.
how clean, dry {!} and safe everything feels around me.
i barely manage to.
later i also enjoy  immensely drifting off to sleep
to a film, intertwined, in the blue glow of the i pad.
it’s a balancing act. as with most things.

myself i'm not balancing steady at all yet.

and i’ve definitely got no halo on.
if so it’d be quite aslant.
but i carry the thoughts with me in my suitcase.
and i long.
i long for something more. not to go back.
but forth.
forth into something where more of us find the balance.
where we really see each other again.

*
november’s caught up with us.

and we’re back at home by the sea.
but first i had to share some october with you.

and all that love,

h

JANUARY LETTERS

liksom bakom ögonen, i mörkret. hör havets rytmiska vågor slå, ända in.

h

there’s a beautiful snowlight, but no snow.
there’s an estimated birth date, today, but no signs yet.
baby sister e have flown here and the days are slowly working
by opposite computers in the studio and are over in the blink of an eye.
the evenings are red wine, jazz from the speaker and
m & baby sister e taking turns cooking pasta dishes;
comfort food for energy and small glasses of red for the soul,
talk and laughter, lined with some tears.
there’s probably a lot of emotions, right by the surface.
sometimes it has to just overspill.
sometimes it meets baby sister e's silent embrace & consummate insight.
sometimes it’s m who hunker in front of me and lock his eyes in mine.
both ways the air and my throat is thick with love.
and we are all three all milky in the evenings,
drift away to sleep and from still steaming teacups and movies.

there’s also and most of all a tranquility that lives here.
a calm in long conversations; stories & memories, family & heritage.
what is to come remains more unspoken, is found mostly in glances held for longer,
in smiling eyes. a pair of moccasins in the smallest of sizes perched on a
pile of books looking like a beautiful little sculpture.
human but not human. not yet.

’wait without thought, for you are not ready for thought.
so the darkness shall be the light and the stillness the dancing.’

writes t.s. eliot

and i do wake up several times at night from - or with as if a strong light behind
the eyes, in the dark. i hear the oceans rhythmic waves hit, all the way inside.
and much like that i let the thoughts dissolve in the night, vanish.
and much like that we are in the days, one and one at a time.
and much like that the dancing is in the stillness.

’.. the faith and the love are all in the waiting.’

and i hope this new year is already dancing
beautifully lightly with you,

ROOTS & WINGS

‘lately i've been struck with how i really love what you can't see in a photograph’.

äta glass i solen. gå längs havet.

under paraplyn, - ler tillbaka.

h

that first stockholm-portrait of us, makes me think of diane arbus's words
‘lately i've been struck with how i really love what you can't see in a photograph’.
certainly there's a whole world of words and thoughts between the linen folds and skin,
but more factually there is also another life, one which so far can not be seen.
one hidden under just that; linen folds and skin. under a black hat and behind repose.
not on show there and then. but certainly there. just not captured.

but as this weekend came, so did my family, on a birthday-surprise.
suddenly they were just there, sitting at my favourite cafe.
and it takes about a minute to even sink in, that they're here.
those most familiar - in a place they never.. are.
worlds collide softly while we drink afternoon tea,
stroke each others cheeks, make dinner plans for the evening,
- & note that the bump has grown considerably since we last met.
now 23 week old butterfly wings evolving in there.

and together we shoot a little. baby sister e raises the camera and there,
another life, in photographs. as much so as one can be captured in a photograph,
when one is yet to come into the world,
but rather is just dancing with heavy, - as yet incomplete,
butterfly wings, on ones mama's inside.

as expected, the days go by way too fast, but is filled to the brim
with all of that which is so important. just to be. together.
playing cards at our kitchen table. having ice cream in the sun.
walking along the sea front. admiring the houses.
enjoying sitting perched on high barstools in the oyster bar
with some of the most beautiful people i know, near, near.
hearing bella's repeated, - & probably mostly to calm herself
‘the police will come, honey, - they will !
and they'll call out honey! honey! we'll help you!
then they pick the beybee out
and it's all right, honey, - bella is here.’

and it is all right. even if the tears flow warm even as i'm just
waking up on the monday morning, knowing they'll have
to be seen off again. knowing we have one breakfast left. m whispers
we’re all here n o w. we all have each other n o w. that's the best part.

and it is. it's all right. bella is here. they're all here.
and even if my vision is blurred by tears again, when i walk
along the sea front in heavy rain later,
alone after seeing their taxi disappear around the corner, i smile.
so much so that those i meet, in raincoats and
under umbrellas, - smile back.

i feel at home here, is the feeling that strikes me.
at home by a totally different sea. and i think that i can handle
living like this; at a distance only for all that i received as a child,
for what they still and always, every single one of them,
gives me. both roots and wings.

with love,

h
